Gua Sha

An ancient healing method used when appropriate to relieve pain, boost circulation, and support your body’s natural healing

What Is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is a traditional East Asian technique that uses smooth-edged tools to gently scrape the skin. This method helps move stagnation, increase circulation, and encourage the body’s natural detox and repair response.

At Empirical Medicine in Glendale, AZ, Gua Sha may be incorporated into your acupuncture or bodywork session if your doctor determines it will support your healing goals.

When Gua Sha May Be Recommended

Your provider may include Gua Sha as part of your treatment plan to support:

  • Muscle or joint pain

  • Neck, shoulder, or back tension

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Immune support or congestion

  • Circulatory and lymphatic flow

What to Expect

Gua Sha is generally relaxing and feels like a deep massage. It may leave temporary red or purple marks that fade within a few days—a normal sign of increased circulation and tissue release.

Because this treatment is prescribed based on Chinese medical diagnosis, not every patient will receive Gua Sha. If recommended, it’s included as part of your overall session at no additional cost.

Offered In-Clinic Only

Gua Sha is available exclusively through in-person care at our Glendale, Arizona location.
